Photo Diary: Summer 2013

Posted on 25 July 2013

So I’ve lost my blogging mojo somewhat this summer, mostly because I’ve been traveling so much. After Iceland and then a business trip to Vegas in June, July started out with a trip to Rhode Island to visit relatives. Here’s my obligatory feet-on-vacation shot by the water in Newport:

After returning home, I had to scramble to get everything in order during my final days at work. That’s right, I officially left my job in July. That means no more seeing this every workday:

It also meant cleaning out my desk, including this stack of old notes and interviews, circa 2008-9. Wasn’t it cute that I once used all that paper?

I barely had a chance to experience unemployment before leaving for the Tin House Writers’ Conference at Reed College in Portland. Here’s where my workshop met:

And where the readings were held:

And the bridge taking me back to the dorm:

I’d hoped that this workshop itself would serve as a bridge between my professional work and my new venture into the full-time writing/student/teaching life. In less than a month, I’ll be beginning my MFA at Bowling Green. Until then, I have lots of ground to cover — one more trip, some work around the house, some gardening, some writing, and, I hope, plenty of cat-and-couch time. I’ll also have to say goodbye to both my writing buddies, who are leaving Cleveland (the same week!) to move with their families to new homes on opposite sides of the country.

But that’s a post for another day.

How’s your summer going? Paint me a picture.

That is some venue for readings.

My summer is yellow. The sun and heat came about 2 weeks ago and we have enjoyed every stinkin’ hot minute of it given its complete non-appearance last summer.

Awww, I wish we could have gotten together while you were in town. (Not that Portland is my town anymore, but still.)

Such a monumental shift for you this summer. I can imagine it must be hard to leave your job behind and start this next two years someplace new, but I know you’re going to love what’s coming. Enjoy your cat and couch time, chickadee.

  • Gorgeous shots!

And, just a reminder, you have another writing buddy who is eagerly awaiting your arrival in northwest Ohio! Let me know as soon as you get here!
