South Dakota Review

Posted on 03 January 2011

It’s that time of year again. No, not the new year and making resolutions and all that. It’s time for me to post photos of cats with a lit mag that includes my work.

My story “The Ballad Solemn of Lady Malena” appears in the Summer 2010 issue of the South Dakota Review. (In case you are confused, yes, it’s the current issue that was just recently released… it’s not like the rest of us never missed a deadline, am I right?) The story is about a charismatic and clever man who develops an unhealthy “interest” in  a 15-year-old figure skating star.

This marks 1) the first time my fiction has appeared in a journal featuring a big spider on the cover and 2) the first and only time my blog posts mentioned South Dakota back to back. (Speaking of that other post, that will also be the only time I voluntarily share my college-era poetry. Or any poetry at all, for that matter.)

Anyway, it’s a lovely journal and as you can see here, Saucy and Cirrus agree.

For the record, no animals were injured in the process of this photo shoot, and in fact they may have benefited from receiving Temptations chicken-flavor snacks as an incentive.

Happy New Year!

This is great! I do love the combination of literary and feline. But more important, the idea that you’re publishing short stories makes my heart beat faster. I’m developing a real love of short stories – writing and reading them.

Congratulations, Laura! I’ll check if B&N here carries a copy of South Dakota Review. It it online anywhere?

That is either one big cat or one small cat…
