An Evening of Awards & Fine Ohio Wines (and perhaps just a dash of humiliation)

Posted on 28 September 2011

If you’re going to be in the vicinity of Columbus, Ohio, on October 14, how’s this for a Friday evening out: Come to the Ohioana Awards and watch me awkwardly accept the Walter Rumsey Marvin Grant!

Seriously, this is my first Ohioana event, and I’m pretty excited. I’m going to find something respectable in my closet (will have to look past my usual “crazy cat lady” ensembles) and make a solemn vow not to get half-tipsy before the ceremonies even begin.

The event honors winners of the Ohioana Book Awards, which this year includes Anthony Doerr (fiction), Ted Gup (nonfiction), David Young (poetry), Cleveland’s own Tricia Springstubb (juvenile), and Arnold Adoff and Kacy Cook (for a book about an Ohioan). I will also be recognized for winning the Walter Rumsey Marvin Grant, which is awarded each year to a young writer with Ohio ties.

According to my invitation, the evening will include hors d’ouevres, Ohio wines, music, the awards presentation, and a panel discussion with the winners. So if you want to mingle with some Ohio authors and/or watch me gaze longingly at the wine as I stutter out my acceptance, please do join us.

Ohioana Reception & Award Presentations
6pm Friday, Oct. 14
Ohioana Library and State Library of Ohio
274 E. 1st Ave.
Columbus, OH 43201
$30 per person

I promise to report back on the evening, no matter how much of a goon I make of myself, once it’s all over. Until then, looks like I’ll be busy attacking my clothes with masking tape to remove the cat hair.

What are you doing Friday night?

    How fantastic!
    Congratulations, Laura!

Well, I know exactly what you should wear – that little number you and Lyra dreamed up – The Cheshire Cat thingmy – cuz I’ll bet you’ll be grinning when you accept your award.

    Ohio wine???

Yayyyyy!!!! Yay for you (gosh, I say that a lot!). I was hoping you might let me interview you for my blog after the book comes out, but every time I see the company you keep I think, oh hell. Maybe a smut-blog’s not the best place for that.

(you know, considering they’re ohio wines it might not be THAT hard to resist…)

  • Aargh! Here I am, only a couple hours away (and always willing to take a road trip for something cool like this) but I have family coming in town that night.

Congrats! So happy for you. What a fabulous fall you’re going to have!
