It’s like a rodeo rider opening a butcher shop.

It’s a good day when one of my favorite authors is on The Colbert Report. On the Feb. 20 show, Ann Patchett discussed the importance of independent bookstores and why she opened Parnassus Books in Nashville. Obviously, the literary writers among us know the answer is all about the money: “I get the royalties plus what I make at the bookstore!” Patchett tells Colbert.
Or, okay, maybe the real reasons are a little different. You’ll have to watch to find out. As a bonus, you’ll also get to see Colbert compare Ann Patchett to Meg Ryan, hear Patchett’s recipe for the Unabomber, learn how to get a signed copy of State of Wonder and more:

I love this SO MUCH. I’m putting it on my blog, too, if you don’t mind!
Of course not! We need to spread the independent bookstore (and Ann Patchett) love.
Yay! A treat for this evening. Thanks, Laura.
“Unavailable video”. Sigh.
Don’t you love Ann Patchett?
(This is totally worth the $2.99 if you’re a writer with an eReader: http://byliner.com/ann-patchett/stories/excerpt-the-getaway-car)
NPR reported yesterday that Colbert won a children’s book contract and I thought, “You mean, a publishing house won the right to publish Colbert’s next book.”
AmyG is right — get Patchett’s The Getaway Car. Loved it.
And isn’t Ann Patchett just, just, just …. Adorbable!!!
This was great! I love the case for independent bookstores. The market didn’t call this one right. I’m glad Ann Pratchett did.
