In the Cards

Posted on 23 October 2012

Last night a tarot card reader wearing a purple turban in a tapas-style restaurant (long story) told me I need to stay focused because I have a lot riding on my current project. Sure, he also incorrectly assumed that I was 1. currently single and 2. a mother, but whatever — when you are two margaritas into a business dinner, the fun of an impromptu tarot reading is to take the vague information and apply it however you see fit.

It’s true I need to stay focused on that new novel I’m working on — but not because I’ll luck out and land some ridiculous publishing deal if I do. I need to do it for myself and for my writing.

Of course, as I expected, since returning from my residency, I have not worked on the new novel at all. At all. I’ve been out of town so much lately that I wake up not sure what city I’m in. But it’s not all a wash. I did, after all, get to see a good Bread Loaf friend while I’ve been here. I had some really great veggie sushi, the aforementioned margaritas, and I can now say that a professional clairvoyant fist-bumped me after he claimed I’d come into lots of money next fall.

I’ll get back to work when I’m home. I have to, after all — I have a lot riding on this.

Well, hell, if a professional clairvoyant fist-bumped you, isn’t that like a blood signature? I know someone who could write a short story out of that…

Mother to cats, yep, this person was right on the money.

If I may, I’d like to caution you about one part of this story.
Veggie Sushi. Margaritas. No really. What were you thinking?

Lots of money next fall? I can see that I need to stay in touch with you, my friend. Now get back to work.

Yes. What Averil says. Get back to work!! Money coming in the fall.

I love having my cards read. How fun. Which reminds me, it’s been 2 years since I’ve seen Charlene, my favorite clairvoyant. Me thinks me needs to give old Charlene a call…..

Tarot readings can be sort of quirky but nice. Especially after margaritas! I like the sound of money rolling in, who doesn’t? But I really hope the project does go well – from what I’m reading of the stories I’m sure you have loads to tell.
